Most coaches don't have a handle on the continuum of learning and exploration during training activities either running the same exact activities too much where learning, engagement and motivation decreases with each successive repeat, or changing things up too much where there is not enough exposure to a similar environment and the affordances in that environment are rarely identified and thus rarely acted upon and then in games these same affordances are presented and result in missed opportunities.
I often run similar activities that present a similar environment/problem for the players to solve but in different ways and this way the problems and similar and the same affordances will present themselves but in a slightly different way each time but not so differently that it's a completely new problem requiring a completely new solution.
Here is a progression of training activities focusing on defensive transition that can be performed 6 different ways, with the numbers used per team altering each time which will present the same, but slightly different solutions to solve and make it past the last line of defense.
Principles of play that we're looking at here is to draw the player to stand the mark, draw the opposition up as much as you can and find/utilise the most dangerous open player you can.
Offensive complexity starts pretty low with a 6v3 which is essentially a 6v2 once you make the first player stand the mark.
Here's how that starts...
