ROUND 1 MINDSET!

Round 1 is up for most of us tomorrow and between now and then you still have the chance to become a better player via this post.

Mindset could not be anymore under utilised in local/amateur football but can have a dramatic effect on your game day performance on an individual level.

If you can develop a team mindset/mental framework then you can far exceed expectations based on your player talent alone.

My go-to performance mindset guru is Dan Abrahams who I follow on Twitter and have posted about a few times before but the psychological co-active is so deep I have at least another 10 posts on it purely from Dan's content in my archives.

Here's 10 psychological tips that you can pick and choose from for your round 1 game.

  1. The secret to winning is to go out to fail because giving yourself permission to fail is your best chance of playing on the front foot rather then on the back foot, to play with freedom rather then fear and to play to win rather then to lose.
  2. Develop a mindset feedback loop by giving yourself a mark out of 10 for mindset and then asking yourself why so high? What do you have to do next time to be even better? Try to create a process where a mindset feedback loop becomes the norm in your preparation.
  3. Determine and use some action-based key words which describes the way you want to execute your actions while playing and can give you a better chance to compete in your best mindset while self-managing under pressure. You'll have seen this before with players writing words on their arm, tape etc.
  4. Nail your pre-game narrative with thoughts like I’m going to take charge of myself, I’m going to be the best individual I can be and the best teammate, nothing will take me away from my best mindset, I can’t force a great performance and I will have my best possible game.
  5. Be prepared to deal with in-game losing as you won’t win every contest so you need to develop the mental skills to help you respond to every lost moment with focus and determination.
  6. We're all returning from longer than normal lay-offs from footy so be kind to yourself by lowering expectations of performance, raise expectations around mindset, keep your language rationale (avoid musts, awfulising etc), keep an open dialogue with coaches, scale pain and create a threshold of when to stop/take a break.
  7. Try mental contrasting by asking yourself what do I want to achieve? Where am I right now? What obstacles are going to stop me from reaching my goal? How will I deal with these obstacles?
  8. Optimise your mindset by putting it first and telling yourself to take charge of yourself to give yourself the best chance to take charge of the opposition.
  9. Nail your game day preparation via picturing a great performance, have a competitive mental framework ready, avoid thinking too much about the game until 2hrs before the 1st bounce, mentally warm up as you physically warm up and have an individual last 10min routine
  10. Some extra game day questions might be what does my best game look/feel like? How can I contribute to the game today? If it’s not going great how can I mentally deal with that? Who do I want to be on the ground?
Good luck to all players and coaches!

TYPES OF KICKS USED IN ROUND 1 PART 2

So far this week we've looked at a study of how team cohesion shapes how you can use the ball and how that pertains to scoring and then a quick look at some quarters of football from round 1 and what types of kicks were used and who they were kicking to.

Even though it was a very small sample size of the full round, just 2 quarters out of 36 quarters every round, it still gives a decent snapshot of ball usage from AFL teams.

My selection process was pretty basic choosing Melbourne because they're the best team overall and the Swans because I barrack for them and their ball movement from end to end is number 1 in the league.

Melbourne and the Bulldogs registered 122 kicks in total between them with Sydney and GWS mirroring them for 121 total kicks with the most obvious stat being that 55% of those kicks were closed play kicks in both games, meaning they came in game situations after a mark, a free kick, or a kick out where the kicker has no pressure and as much time as they need/want until the umpire calls play on.

The "kicks to" side of the table tells a more telling story of the type of football played that quarter with Melbourne/WB kicking to an open teammate the most followed by to an even numbered contest and for territory/to space and a leading teammate just below that.

The game was tight in close but once the ball was taken out of congestion then both teams were able to transition the ball relatively freely, and keeping the ball in motion finding teammates in space to play on immediately with the bigger MCG ground dimensions helping out there.

In the Syd/GWS game the "kicks to" was a bit different with kicking to even numbered contest, to a stationary teammate followed by a teammate under no pressure and a leading teammate just below them.

The game was hot for a fair portion of the game and even when the Swans were able to kick a way a bit in the back end of the 3rd and the front end of the 4th quarters, the game was still very much contested which is what you'd expect from a team that focuses heavily on contested possession like GWS, and a team whose only weakness in past years has been contested possession in the Swans.

So what can us local/amateur footy clubs take out of this?

For me it is to find a mark as soon as you can which means you get to control the game, control the ball and have the opportunity to perform closed skill kicks under limited pressure and with the extra time you have to perform these kicks, the more time you have to find a suitable option to move the ball to.

Putting your focus on handballing out of congestion over hack/dump kicks, and to find someone in some space to be able to outlet under zero or some pressure will result in a lot more marks being taken then blast kicks out of packs in a kick and hope situation.

What I found interesting but not surprising watching the Swans intently for the last 12 months is finding stationary targets to kick to which again are easier targets to hit than moving one's, so in training you'll need to use scenario's around this skill as players will need to learn how to find space that the kicker has easy access to, with the man on the mark stand rule making this easier than it's ever been.

If you can get as little as 2 - 3 short chip kicks that gain some territory in an end-to-end passage of play, and use the right players in the right area's of the ground, it's probably the difference between a deep inside 50 to 4+ of your forwards and a shallow entry to 2 - 3 of your forwards and an opposition outnumber on top of that.

Eager to hear your thoughts on this.

TYPES OF KICKS USED IN ROUND 1

In my previous post I looked at a study recently released that aimed to find correlations between collective behavior and team performance in regards to how tactical, technical, physical and psychological actions affect the outcome of AFL games.

One of it's conclusions was that it may be beneficial to focus on optimising attacking via low pressure ball movement and off the back of that I thought I'd take some hard stats on what AFL teams actually do in games.

Knowing what happens in games allows you to train more efficiently and effectively and instead of training what you want to happen, like center clearance work with zero defenders or opposing ruck, you train what actually does happen, and give yourself the chance of actual transfer of training into games otherwise you're really wasting your time.

Below you'll find stats for all 1st quarter kicks taken from the Melbourne v Western Bulldogs game, followed by all 3rd quarter of kicks taken from the Sydney v GWS game, both from round 1 this past weekend.

All category totals are for both teams combined for the entire quarter.

  • Open Kick No Pressure (ground ball, handball receive, mark then play on n the clear) x 18
  • Open Kick Some Pressure (pressure within 3 - 5m) x 16
  • Open Kick High Pressure (immediate pressure, being tackled while kicking) x 17
  • Hack/Dump Kick Down the Line (kicks out of congestion with no obvious target) x 4

THE STRUCTURAL RELATIONSHIP BETWEEN THE 4 CO-ACTIVES OF PERFORMANCE IN AFL

A few weeks ago my Twitter feed was blessed by this post from a skill acquisition specialist from Sydney Job Fransen.

The post was about a study he was a part of conducting with a bunch of others called "A Holistic Analysis of Collective Behavior and Team Performance in Australian Football via Structural Equation Modeling", or to put it simply, the structural relationship between technical, tactical, physical and psychological aspects during a game of football.

Just to refresh in a very simplified way, the 4 co-actives of performance are:

  1. Technical - skill actions like kicks, marks and handballs
  2. Tactical - team formations like center square set up and defensive set ups
  3. Physical - anything that puts physical loading on a player such as sprinting, collisions and change and direction.
  4. Psychological - the emotional stress a player is under at any given time in a game.

According to this study, the big takeaways were:

  • Scoring opportunities + ball movement had direct associations with quarter margin (construct your ball movement to result in a high quality inside 50 entries and thus, greater scoring opportunities)
  • Unpredictability, uncontested behavior and physical behavior did not (a lack of game plan, high uncontested game relative to contested game and a lot of running and collisions doesn't really get you anywhere)
  • Negative associations between uncontested behavior and scoring opportunity suggest that elevated high-pressure success and a lack of synchrony may positively influence scoring opportunity - a determinant of quarter margin (perfect formations around the ball is great but you have to win the ball above all else!)
  • There were also negative associations between physical behavior and ball movement suggesting that with less physical work, a team's collective ability to transfer possession between teammates is facilitated (the best team's do less work from greater organisation and thus, predictability, with and without the ball)

The major implications here is that game plans and training that focus on optimising attacking and low-pressure ball movement coupled with with high levels of mutual interaction between teammates may be beneficial for performance.

In a nutshell, you want a very successful contested game that allows you to break congestion as fast as possible and then you can use a possession style of footy (kick, mark, kick mark) with some basic principles for team cohesion that will hopefully result in minimal possessions under direct pressure from the opposition.

In my next post I'll post some stats from some games from round 1 in response to this.
