1 LINE COACHING GEMS FROM ALL SPORTS

I compile coaching information form an extremely wide variety of sports all over the world because principles remain the same and it's only the methods that change.

Below you'll find 1 line coaching gems from sports including running, basketball, rugby and soccer.

After reading these my suggestion is to write a little something about each one of how you can use that information in your own coaching and put them into action...

STEP 1 IN DEVELOPING YOUR VERY OWN GAME MODEL

I've ranted and raved about how important game models are at local/amateur level that it's time to help you develop one and like everything in life it's a step by step process.

Here's step 1.

Head on over to the Aussie Rules Training Facebook or Twitter page and comment on what you can come up with in accordance with your own personal take on each game moment and what you think should happen - there are no wrong answers here!

SYDNEY SWANS FAKE KICK OUT TACTIC

I can't remember if this was from last week's game against North Melbourne or the week before against Essendon but the mighty Sydney Swans used a nice little tactic to throw the opposition of where their kickout was going.

This is pretty easily replicable for any club as long as the game model is being followed by each player as far as starting positions and then player movement is concerned.

From there it's simply a matter of running through it at training to get the timing and sequencing correct as well as deciding which player/s are able to do the exact type of kick that will be required in that specific game action.

The kicking out player can handball or short kick to the 1st option depending on how the defensive zone is set up and where that closest defender is but the player receiving the ball must be able to play on immediately and not have to go back and kick over the man on the mark.

Here's how it played out...

INDIVIDUAL TACTICS v TEAM TACTICS

Over the weekend I read this article that really nailed why individual and team tactics should really be at the forefront of your team training and how training tiny aspects in isolation with zero game context WILL NOT transfer to anything that is required within a game.

The article was pretty much summed up with this singular comment:

"...every game action, regardless which of the 4 game moments it occurs in, involves a decision (tactical), an action/motor skill (technical), that require a particular movement (physical) and is directed by volitional/emotional states (psychological)..."

I'm going to break this down while referring to this specific game action from the Fremantle/Port Adelaide game from last night...

I am also available for in-person footy training appearences in the Melbourne area for any age group where I can run training session/s for your football club set up in accordance with your coach/s with the aim to better teach what you want to teach your players from an individual and team point of view. I could also simply grade your session/s and provide feedback on how to make them better as well - DM me for details.

BALL MOVEMENT DRILLS PART 2

Earlier this week I had a local junior coach here in Melbourne contact me about how to go about training ball and player movement and I responded with quite a lengthy post on it.

He sent me some feedback last night saying the boys really enjoyed it and could clearly see the benefits of the drill, so a good start there.

Today I'm just going to outline a few different ways you can go about doing this via some pretty simple diagrams but the rules and constraints you apply are what makes these drills work.

I've provided some basic movement patterns below that you can have your players try to emulate against opposition.

THE PROCESS LEVEL II PART 4 - FERGUS CONNOLLY / CAM JOSSE

This is the last post consisting of my notes from The Process Part II of which there have been 60 odd in this series, over 100 from Level 1 and close to 200 from the Game Changer book.

I mean if you're not reading these books then you're just trying to be the best coach you can be.

I've provided a fair bit of insight into these books as well but if I'm to be honest, I had read a lot of that type of information prior to those books and I only note what might be new to me or what I would like a reminder of for future reference.

For a coach who doesn't read as much as I do then if I made 200 notes from Game Changer then you'll make double, that minimum.

There's going to be a change, or an increased focus towards coaching and development at the local/amateur level very, very soon as the football shutdown has left a great deal of clubs on the brink of collapse - my own included.

To build a successful club on the feild you need to follow this sequence of events:
  1. Maintain your current playing list
  2. Develop them through coaching and environment
  3. Have success with them
  4. Attract better players to your club because of it
  5. Start again
Big clubs skip these steps and go straight to step 6 and that's to pay big dollars to anyone and everyone but once the money dries up than what are you left with?

Big leagues taking the 2020 season off all over Victoria.

My mission for the rest of this year to start an in-person football program consisting of programs for both players an coaches that focuses exactly on all the principles found in these books so if you want to move with the football landscape before it happens, make sure to get in touch with me to discuss, including the Youth Football School Holiday program I'm still hopefully holding in the western suburbs of Melbourne (Williamstown hopefully).

YOUTH FOOTBALL COACH REQUEST - BALL MOVEMENT DRILL/S

Yesterday I received this message from a youth football coach:
"...do you have anything to simulate pushing back hard after a mark/play on at all costs scenario with players ahead of the ball being able to read the play developing in front of them?..."

The more I think about it the more loaded this question becomes for me but in a good way.

The 2 main points I want to present will be:
  • Breaking down the individual skill/s required in this action/s
  • The easiest way to build cohesivness all over the ground
Then of course some scenario drills to put this into action.

From the request above, there is a specific skill, an underrated skill, that is required before the kick has even occurred - do you know what it is?

I'll wait....

Time's up!

Pushing back hard off the mark.

Most coaches will say this over and over without actually explaining and/or demonstrating what it is and for far to long coaches have assumed every single player knows exactly what they mean when they say something, and that could not be any further from reality.

On top of that, most times at training there won't even be anyone on the mark to push back from so what you're potentially left with is a cue you use constantly that some players don't even know what it is, peformed in scenario's and situations with absolutely zero context.

And you wonder why all your coaching goodness doesn't translate to games...well unfortunately you need to look in the mirror.

So before even trying to whip up a full ground-fast break play from full back to full forward, let your players self explore different ways of simply pushing back off the mark by actually having a man on the mark.

Give them the opportunity in a self perceived "simple" and psychological safe enviroment to actually practice pushing back of the mark and hitting a variety of targets coming at them from different angles.

A couple of weeks ago I posted a training drill for this exact purpose.

The second part of this is once again, a Game Model.

A Game Model is designed to align all area's of a club or team, in this specific case, the players.

All players are drilled on the Game Model above all else, and definitely above nailing 2km time trials.

All players will have their specific position starting position and movement patterns based on where the ball is on the feild.

So if there is a stoppage on the right half back flank then a portion of the Gem Model will have in detail, where each player is to get to with the restart of play (when the ball gets thrown up).

In accordance with the Game Model each player will know:
  • Their very own starting position
  • 1 - 2 play patterns if we win the ball
  • 1 - 2 play patterns if we donlt win the ball
On top of individual Game Modelling, each player will also be fully informed on every other player's starting position and play patterns at the same time, to build total cohesivness.

This is how your players will be able to read the play developing in front of them and the player options will be plentiful because the player with the ball already has a fair idea of whare to go, what to do and who do go to at any given time.

Ultimately this will speed up their decsion making dramatically thus giving them more time and space to execute the skill effectively and efficiently.

What happens if you don't have a Game Model?

Well we see it all the time at local/amateur footy level and that's when 1 player has the ball then everyone is trying to become the very next option right there and then.

So if you're kicking into the forward 50 from a mark on the wing and you have 6 forwards in front of you and they are all trying to be the next option in the forward 50, all leading to different spaces and/or the same space.

All this does is confuse the kicker who is trying to see what all 6 players are doing, who's the best option and then he has to execute the skill all before the defense can set up and defend - near impossible.

And if the ball player can't find a suitable option then all those 6 leading forwards are all out of position and you end up kicking to a pack of 8 - 12 players, nothing happens and it's a wasted scoring opportunity.

If you had a Game Model then you might have some play patterns in place for players who find themselves in certain positions who work "off the ball" to create space for someone else.

So they might find themsleves manned up but sitting on the fat side that you want to open up for leads away from the defensive congestion.

That player will hopefully identify that quickly and lead to a perceived dangerous spot (at the ball carrier for example) that will force their defender to go with them.

A player from the opposite side of the ground knowing that we don't kick to congested area's in the forward line can then make a run through the congestion to the open fat side for a pretty easy and usually uncontested mark in the forward 50, and a pretty decent scoring opportunity to go with it.

That's just 1 of many, many options you can create via Game Model.

This series of videos lays out scenario's aimed at developing possession football and cohesiveness within your team and is exactly what I'll be teaching at the Gameday Tactics Introduction for Youth Footballers school holiday program.

So coaches/parents, if your players/child could benefit from this program in their footy for 2020 and beyond then please let me know.

THE PROCESS LEVEL II PART 3 - FERGUS CONNOLLY / CAM JOSSE

The last post from the Process Level 2 looked a lot at the 4 co-active model which I have posted about a lot and for good reason - it's the best and simplist way to judge players current development as a player over all aspects of the game.

Local/amatuer footy has such a high focus on the physical co-active of footy which, even if you max that area out, is still only at best, fulfilling 25% of your full potential.

Worse still, even when players get to a relatively high level of the physical co-active, we try and push them and higher, resulting in lack of motivation from minimal benefits from such a high volume/intensity of work and still you're totally ignoring the other 3 co-actives for the most part.

Today we look at what good and bad teams do and also how games fit into team training and to optimise the use of them.

THE PROCESS LEVEL II PART 2 - FERGUS CONNOLLY/CAM JOSSE

Whoever gets to play this season will without doubt be going into round 1 on limited training, and thus, fitness.

The best way to get around a lack of fitness is to implement a Game Model to build an alignment on everything that goes on during a game.

For example when the ball is coming into the forward line from a slow build up, what you'll find is 9 times out of 10 is that all 6 forwards are looking to be the next option, all at the same time.

The implications of this are:
  • It's easy to defend as most of those forwards will present to the same spot on the ground or in very close proximity to it, where a basic defensive cluster will cut out most of these available options off with minimal movement
  • When all forwards peresent at the same time, even in different spots, if none of them can be used then everyone is now out of position and where's the second option coming from?
By implementing a game model each forward would know what their next play would be depending on their position on the feild at that point in time, as would the player with the ball.

Be predictable to your teammates but unpredictable to the opposition!

Here are the next 13 points I made from the book...

MINIMUM EFFECTIVE DOSE FAST FITNESS RUNNING PROGRAM

Although some leagues have already called off season 2020, there's still a lot of us down here in Melboure waiting for the official word from our specific leagues whether we're on or off.

It's out of our control at this point but if and when we do get back to it then there's going to be players who need to gain fitness and they'll need to gain it fast!

Technically it's close to impossible to gain "fitness fast" but what they will need to is to get back to the high end of their natural running capabilities in as little time as possible.

We may only have 3 - 4 weeks or 6 - 8 training sessions to train before round 1 of which most training SHOULD be heavily focused on ball and tactical, work in my opinion.

That being said you could easily use this program at training or have your players do it in their time away from the club, as it only needs to be done probably 2/week, and maybe only 1/week once game starts.

The program could could carry you through until the finals the way it's set up.

Now what does minimum effective dose refer to exactly?

Glad I asked.

MED refers to the least amount of work you can do to gain the most benefit - that's it.

The "work" part of that refers to time availability and also the energy/recovery resources that you have at your disposal and is crucial to this working correctly on top of your team training.

The physcial co-active is the one we focus on the most but it's a distant 4th out of 4 in my book behind tactical, technical and psychological, especially when it comes to team training sessions.
Fitness work can easily be done on your own for the same effect, freeing up more time for tactical work when youre teammates are around.

Wanna know a secret?

The better your team tactics and how your team can play within them, the less fitness you need anyway.

The last positive points of this program is that it is easy to follow and gradually builds up your running speed, with the early relatively slower phases preparing you for the later faster phases meaning you should be able to stay injury free throughout the journey.

Here it is...

If you would like access to this program and plenty more then register for a level 2 membership at https://aussierulestraining.com/membership-account/membership-levels/ and let me know your interest for the Gameday Tactics Introduction for Youth Footballers and coaches running in the school holidays.

THE PROCESS LEVEL II - FERGUS CONNOLLY/CAM JOSSE

Over the last 2 years or so I have dramatically changed my outlook on how I approach coaching team sports, all thanks to Fergus Connolly.

I had been aware of his 1st major team spors coaching book Gamer Changer for a while before I purchased and I shouldn't have waited as long as I did to make the literal purchase.

As soon as the first edition in The Process series was released I jumped on it asap, as I did with the level 2 edition here.

I don't care what team sport you're involved in, anything Fergus and Cam Josse is involved in will make you a better coach then your contemperaries - it's that simple.

The beauty of this information is that ZERO coaches you go up against will be using it, unless they are readers of this blog, so you'll have a major advantage.

To really emphasise that advantage I'm also looking to start some in-person school holiday programs for youth footballers AND coaches to teach this stuff and bring it into the mainstream of local/amateur football here in Australia as it can save a coach low on resources, a lot of time and energy in the long term.

If you've been a consistent reader of my content for a couple of years now then you might recognise some of the terms I use in thse notes so here's the first batch I've made from  level 2 that I'm reading right now and if you need clarification on anything then please hit me up...

MELBOURNE YOUTH FOOTBALLERS + COACHES

Still some hoops to jump through to get the full go ahead for this but we're after an expression of interest of players aged 11 - 15yrs and coaches of the same age brackets to take part in this over the school holidays at potentially 2 locations.
By expressing your interest now you will have first dibs at this once we can open it up officically as it may not happen until late between now and when we propose to run the program.
Contact me if you require more information.
