2 TRAINING DRILLS I RAN FROM TUESDAY NIGHT

I was given the duty of running a couple of drills with the entire senior/reserve group on Tuesday while the senior coach got around to individual players.

One was for touch/skill straight out of the player warm up and the other was for a pressure/tackling focus.

AFLW INSIGHTS 2021 - FINALS WEEK 3

This will be the final edition of the AFLW Insights for season 2021 so I hope you've enjoyed watching/reading them and also been able to improve your own game intelligence from them as well, regardless if you're a player or a coach.

BRISBANE LIONS TEAM DEFENSE

MY TAKE

AFL and AFLW teams do a lot of their game analysis via the behind the goals vision and this shows why, enabling us to see the Lions full team press defense on show.

First up, they condense the ground into about a 70x40m area.

Secondly, they are alert and react very quickly to the Crows changing direction of their ball movement on multiple occasions.

Thirdly, as the Crows shift the ball back to the same spot where this vision starts, the Lions are right back into their starting formation and force a turnover in the middle of the ground.

AFLW INSIGHTS 2021 - FINALS WEEK 1 PART 2

PERCEPTION-ACTION COUPLING MELBOURNE GOAL

MY TAKE

Perception-Action Coupling is a must for all team sports and in a nutshell, refers to reacting to what you see.

Now WHAT you see is dependant is how many different scenarios you've been exposed and also how many different solutions you've attempted to solve whatever problems arise within them.

Ideally you want to have been exposed to many different scenarios and situations in training and games so that you can start developing high game intelligence from being able to recognise patterns of play and the cues within those plays to be able to anticipate the next game action and therefore be able to react faster then your opposition.

This isn't exactly that but what the Melbourne player does in this instance is that in the time it took for her to drop the ball within her kicking action to the ball getting to her foot (.185secs by my timing method), she realised that if she was to kick the ball as it was, that it would be smothered.

In the .4secs she took to regather the ball afer not going through the kick, she regathered it and had a free swing at the kick under zero pressure.

This type of skill and play recognition can only be built in game type training, not cone to cone drills - just sayin.

AFLW INSIGHTS 2021 - FINALS WEEK 1

SHALLOW FREMANTLE EXITS FROM DEFENSE

I've had a shallow exit insight in most weeks for season 2021 and Freo really excelled in them this past weekend.

Freo are at their best when they can recound out of defense and surge down the ground getting over the back-type goals but from a combination of Melbourne's pressure and the tornado running through Casey during the game, they were often pushed right back to Melbourne's goal.

I've put 4 separate defensive exits in the 1 video but here's a little bit on each of them.

AFLW ROUND 9 - KICK OF THE WEEK

Who do you choose and why?

Let me know.

AFLW INSIGHTS 2021- ROUND 9 PART 4

ADELAIDE 2 TO THE BALL

MY TAKE

This was a bit dissapointing mainly because of the high standards the Crows have set throughout the AFLW competition.

The Crows player on the mark had plentyy of time to see her teammate Martin running to the Collingwood player gathering the ball stationary so she'll easily be able to pressure her if she decides to kick.

Instead she continues running towards the Collingwood receiver who now just has an easy-peasy handball back to the kicker who has now been left alone.

Adequate game intelligence would havehad the initial Crows player see her teammate who weas in the D1 position and her only decision at that point is to take up D2 duties which is to defend her direct opponent and then let it play out.

She needs to trust that Martin will get to the ball carrier, which she was going to do, and with a game model that assigns these responsibilities to improve decision making in these situations, that's what should have happened.
