These notes come from what I'm pretty sure was a Twitter thread from soccer coach developer Gary Piggott.
It provides a very clear and concise picture of what coaches should be taking into account before each training session and when planning to introduce new playing concepts to their teams.
WHAT x have a clear learning focus, what do the players need help with?
HOW x training activity progressions, the end game, ensure repetition of the focus throughout
WHY x the reason for session, is it what the players need to develop or is it game related/simulation?
CHALLENGE/MOTIVATION x how will each player be appropriately stretched/challenged? Is each athlete is being motivated every session? Ensure training is not too hard or too easy for any player
PLAYER'S OWNERSHIP x are you giving players all the information throughout or do you allow them to learn on their own?
SIMPLICITY x don’t over-complicate things, keep your message/s concise?
CORE COACHING SKILLS x how will you organise, manage, communicate and observe during training?
Now you might find you don't have all the answers to these questions but don't worry that's a good thing because curious coaches are the best coaches and now you'll be motivated to find them out and you're well on your way to becoming a better coach!
