FREMANTLE v COLLINGWOOD GAME ANALYSIS

We've been keeping an eye on Collingwood's center bounce clearances the past couple of weeks, in particularly how they attempt to drag the opposition's sweeper out of position and create a huge exit point, directly forward out of the contest.

I tracked all 23 center bounces clearances and found Collingwood held their sweeper in 13 of them, had no sweeper at all for 4 of them and only aggressively tried to drag the opposition sweeper in only 6 times - a real true sign of respect to the Fremantle midfield at center bounces.

The Pies were always going to have it over the Dockers on field position in general play because of Freo's dreadful ball movement so cutting them off at center bounces would go a long way to getting the win.

Throughout this video we track what Collingwood were going with throughout the game with a couple of general play clips thrown in for good measure.

SYDNEY SWANS v WESTERN BULLDOGS GAME ANALYSIS

7 clips from the Sydney/Bulldogs game from Thursday night where the dogs severely underscored according to expected score + lost Ed Richards just after half time, who was best on at that stage of the match but those are the breaks I guess.

In this near 13min video we take a look at:

  • Sydney getting both of their wings extremely deep in defense but with width on the fat side for a defensive 50 rebound
  • 1 of the secrets to Sydney kick ins
  • Sydney's defensive 50 formation to cut off the corridor area to goal
  • Rampe game intelligence
  • Bulldogs turn off defensively inside defensive 50
  • 2 examples of Sydney coming forward to defend

17 SYDNEY SWANS TRAINING ACTIVITIES

I've had these in the files for a couple of years but I got them off the internet from someone who watches training then tries to describe the activity, not video it like the Collingwood ones I've posted.

This post will give you an idea of the types of games the Swans like to use, and their socials in the pre-season are full of game play so they're obviously extremely partial to them, and local footy teams should start doing so as well.

This post will be a mix of simple explanations for activities to diagrams and videos on an as needed basis and contains activities from academy, women's and men's programs.

COLLINGWOOD v ADELAIDE GAME ANALYSIS

As usual I gave the Collingwood game a close look, being very interested into seeing if they continued with the center bounce trend from last week v West Coast.

These 4 clips consist of 2 center bounce clearances won by Collingwood, 1 won by Adelaide via negating the sweeper getting drawn too far in and also how Collingwood manufacture an acre of space inside their forward 50 for a mark and goal.

MORE ON SYDNEY SWANS CONNECTION/666 (ANIMATION VIDEOS)

Yesterday I posted some videos on how the Swans stay connected in a very compacted style as much as possible during games.

The main reason for this is to play with as many of your 18 players as possible as often as possible.

The more players you can utilise, then the more you can isolate defenders.

The more players you have within 1 kick of the play, the more options you have to choose from when you are in possession, and this feeds the Swans also preferable kick-mark style to move the ball and gain territory in both slow and fast play game moments.

Posting those videos I suddenly remembered some animated videos I made up a couple of years ago based on this I developed on a website/app called sportplan.net.

I made these videos after a fair bit of stuffing around trying to work it out (not my strong suit!) and now for the life of me I can't remember at all how I actually completed them but if anyone can sort that I'd be happy to be reminded how!

Regardless I was able to make these videos that gives you a full ground, and full team view of how this connection/666 aspect of a game model would/should look like - very similar to what I've posted in yesterday's videos, and other video's of the Swans so far this season.

SYDNEY TEAM CONNECTION ON DEFENSE/OFFENSE

Since 2021, Sydney have used a pretty basic but discipline requiring formation to stay connected on offense and defense what I've unorignally coined, "666".

It's a formation that allows them to defend and attack with as many as close to all 18 players as possible and is probably the main reason we consistently have outnumbered teams all over the ground in the last 3 - 4 seasons.

I'm sure I've posted clips of this before but these 3 clips give  area clear look of what it looks like in real time.

There's a lot more on how to develop this in the Sydney Swans Game Style package.
