These days I read as much content I can find on athletes and teams from different sports just as much as tactical content.
I have posted countless times before about the 4 co-actives of sports performance (tactical, technical, physical and psychological) and how the 4th co-active there is rarely, if ever, the focus for local/amateur footy teams when it should be probably number 1.
Confidence is psychologcal aspect of sport and is the back bone of any high level performance you've seen or performed yourself.
Without that confidence then whatever tactical, technical or physical tools you have are severley limited.
As far as footy goes we're all down to the last few games of the season and finals lucky enough for those of us who make them but between now and then you're going to have a particular game where you already realise that you need to do more than just run your game plan at a high level of technical and physical prowess.
That final edge you're looking for is literally, in this case, right behind your eyes, and it's mindset.
The limits of mindset so far in local/amateur footy is the coach giving a pump up speech that really resonates with maybe half the group and everyone yells "c'mon" and run out all pumped up only for that emotion to fizzle all the way out 10mins into the game and you're left wanting when the real pressure comes later in the game.
Real mindset training revolved around smaller, deliberate activities that players can do in their own time, or performed as a team.
They are free of emotion and biases and are more analytical than any other preparation you'll do for a game.
You'll need to dig deep into your psyche and than dig deeper some more, unpeeling the layers on your thoughts as far as you can and that's when you really get to ground zero on mindset training.
A terrible analogy is an addict having to really hit rock bottom before they admit they have a problem - we might see feeling terrible, being homeless with no future everyday of your life as rock bottom but for addicts that almost the lifestyle and it's not until something EXREMELY drastic happens that the need for change enters their mindset.
What I've put together here is a week's worth of entry-level mindset activites that are pefrect for this time of the year because you're not going to get anymore skillful and you're not going to get anymore fitter between now and Grand Final day.
Simply give this out to your players but strongly encourage them to share their work with teamnates and/or coaches.
If you have a really responsive group to these types of activities then feel free to do a group session for some bonding time.
Lastly this is something you can revisit throughout the year and can also be built around your tactical game model too.
As always let me know any questions you have on this.
