Women's Football - Introducing Sarah Andrews

You might have seen my recent call outs to female footballers who dream of playing in the AFLW.

I believe that RIGHT NOW is the best time for female footballers to make this a reality because as the playing numbers explode in the coming years (already at 1.2 million across Australia!), competition will really heat up.

I'm not saying that competition isn't extremely high already but it will get even harder to get noticed by recruiters or even get invites to testing days when the pool is much bigger.

One of the girls I'm training right now is Sarah Andrews.

Sarah attended the AFLW talent identification day in the Northern Territory where she currently plays, after coming from a roller derby background and she's a 180cm, 80kg battering ram ruckwoman.

In our initial discussions she told me that from roller derby she has great lower body stability, strength and force which make sense from being in a semi-squat position a lot of the time while playing and training for roller derby.

She is actually very strong in the quality that most females aren't in that regard which is great, except the isometric hold position is a killer for reactiveness which is plyometric ability, or simply 'bounciness".

This means she "muscles" everything she does which was great when she tested high for contested balls at the talent day, but that also doesn't really allow her to use any plyometric ability when running and jumping.

You want commitment? She's currently driving from Alice Springs to Melbourne then onto Tasmania but while she's making her way down, she's still doing the mini-workouts I have set out for her until she settles in Tassie!

Our aim right now is to teach her nervous system to relax and contract her muscles very quickly with minimal tension, which will be a long term project, but hopefully being exposed to a new stimulus quite frequently, will result in some excellent initial improvements in speed times.

She is training everyday that she can for 20 - 30mins focusing on a very high quality of work with the focus on relaxation in every drill she does.

Her first phase of training is 3 x 5 days cycles (15 days total) that can be done "on the road" until she settles, then we'll ramp it up slowly but surely to keep the improvements going.

We are in contact almost daily which is essential for online training, but we hope to meet up in about a months time in-person which will help us both as well.

If you're interested in taking your footy to the next level, and then the BIGGEST level of them all then fill in this application form and I'll get back to within 24hrs. Also I'm toying with the idea of holding a female footballers training camp in February in Melbourne so if you're interested in that then please let me know as I'll need to get the ball rolling pretty quickly on that if we're to do it!
