AFLW INSIGHTS 2021 - ROUND 4 PART 2

RICHMOND D1/2/3

I posted about the D1/2/3 concept here not ago so if you need some back ground reading on it then have a quick look before this video.

MY TAKE

Richmond played a mammoth game against the Blues but it's simple things that undo a lot of good work for alot of AFLW teams.

A quick recap of the D1/2/3 concept is that if there are 3 or more defenders in vicinity of the contest/ball then the closest defender (D1) goes the contest/ball/player with the ball, the 2nd closest defender (D2), checks the 2nd closest opposition player and the 3rd closest defender (D3) closes up the most dangerous space.

This is a great example of why this is a pretty important concept for teams of all levels to learn and train.

Richmond mess this up strtaight away by having 2 players run to the contest/ball v 1 Carlton player with both ofd those players not actually touching the ball or impacting the conterst at all even though they were less than 1m ball (Paul Roos 1m Rule - get the ball or make the tackle!).

This sets off a chain of average forfeard defensive pressure where the 3rd Richmond player also misses the tackle and then a 4th Richmond player misses another tackle!

In the end Carlton escape a 5v3 in their defensive 50 smack bang against the boundary.
