AFLW INSIGHTS 2021 - ROUND 5 PART 2

WESTERN BULLDOGS MISSED SWITCH KICK

MY TAKE

Although we can clearly see the missed kick is the main issue here I just want to touch on skill aquisition here.

The ablity to turn and kick on your right foot to a lateral option is a specific skill as it's not the same kick you would do if you just kicked straight down the line, or if you were turning to your left for a lateral kick on your right foot.

The steps required to square up to each of the above kicks will be different to each other so you can't automatically assume that players that can kick to front-on targets like kick to kick, have the optimal self organisational skills to coordinate the kicking motion within a different action, or around different constraints and affordances.

This particular Bulldogs player may need more exposure to turning and kicking laterally to her right side to fully nail this kick next time, as the Bulldogs were well set up to be able to take the ball all the way to the other side of the ground and away from the congestion, but instead the poor kick puts everyone under pressure and you see the end result just seconds later.

So if there are specific kicks required within your game model then players must be placed in training situations and scenarios where those kicks, and similar kicks to them, can be practiced under gradual amounts of physical and psychological stress.

I have 19 pieces of vision from this round so if you want access to all of them then register for a level 1 membership at https://aussierulestraining.com/membership-account/membership-levels/.
